On 5th March 2026, the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) Leicester and the Apparel & Textile Manufacturers Federation (ATMF) joined forces with Leicester Community Links CIC to deliver a Repairs and Upcycle Workshop at the Pepul Centre. The event highlighted the power of community, sustainability, and shared learning.
Part of the Wider Repair Café Programme
The workshop formed part of the Repair Café programme, bringing together participants united by a common goal: reducing waste and extending the life of everyday items. Attendees engaged in clothing repairs, upcycling projects, and practical activities designed to promote long-term sustainable habits.
The event fostered a strong sense of community spirit. Participants didn’t simply repair their items and leave—they stayed, exchanged ideas, and shared personal stories. Volunteers, professionals, and community members worked together, creating an open-learning environment where knowledge and skills were freely shared.
Hands-On Support from FTA Leicester
FTA Leicester played a key role in supporting the workshop, providing expertise in sewing and garment repair. Their guidance reinforced the importance of education and skills-sharing as a local solution to environmental challenges.
Reflecting on the initiative, Taruna Mistry, CEO of Leicester Community Links CIC, said:
“Community members came together to repair and learn sewing skills. FTA (ATMF/FEL) Leicester has provided great support by helping us deliver this workshop. It was inspiring to see how organisations like FEL/ATMF help small communities like ours. This really shows how small actions can make a big difference for both the planet and people.”
Community Impact and Future Initiatives
The collaboration proved both inspiring and rewarding, demonstrating how grassroots initiatives like Repair Cafés promote environmental responsibility while strengthening local connections.
FTA Leicester looks forward to continuing its support for similar sustainability-focused initiatives, helping communities develop practical skills, reduce waste, and build lasting networks of collaboration.
